Hip surgery Fai and labrum repair

My hip - lower back problem has been going on for over a year now it's 2013. It started out with a little pain that I pushed through (3months or so) some days where better then other. Months later it got to the point after training I was limping and was feeling a catching sensation dip in my hip. I contacted a local physical Therapist and started my blind adventure on figuring out what was up. Therapy only worked for a week or so because we had been throwing darts at the floor and not knowing the real cause so I got a MRI a couple weeks later ( open MRI because I'm closterphobic ) it revealed a bone bruise on my left femoral head. Prescription was to have no sport activity for 3 months. So I took the summer off only to return to Jiujitsu and Muay Thai With the same problem. Following that I saw another therapist in hopes that he could diagnose this case with out another MRI. This time it went on for a month with limit heavy activity and still the same out come. So I cowboyed up and got an arthiogram MRI. It revealed a tear in my left hip next step was To go to a trained Sports orthopedic specialist in hips. Dr parvizi of the Rothman institute suggested I not only get my labrum repaired but also the fai condition on both hips! He Also said if there is a tear in my left hip my right will also have one. Sure enough after surgery he came in a spoke with me to tell me the out come. He said ill make a 100 percent recovery none of my cartilage was damage to the point of no return and my femoral heads did well in the shaving process. There will be no martial arts for 3 months or running but ill start the the exercise bike on day seven and swimming on day 10. Below ill blog my journey to recovery !

DAY ONE IN THE BOOKS

I just got out of surgery today may 30th 2013.I was shaking like a wet leaf leading up until the Anesthiaologist gave me the " Good stuff" and my girlfriend held my hand :). I woke up in the recovery room happy to be done. Pain is a 3 on a scale from 1 to10 and legs feel numb. Later I walked around the hospital ( shuffled 15 feet) with a walker and two physical therapist. Now I'm just chilling watching tv and texting. Again I made myself think it was going to be worse then what it is.

Day two
I slept horrible tonight maybe an hour if I was lucky. Between the nurses checking me and pain I wasn't able to sleep a wink. Breakfast arrived at 730 I'd be starving because of the fast for surgery and the liquid diet the day be before that so I wolfed down my French toast and headed to physical therapy.i passed with flying colors and was released to go home.while on my way home it was so nice to see sun light it was like I was locked up in a cave forever

Day 3
Last nights rest was way better 6+ hours. Pain was bad this am but got better through out the day with breakfast! I did my at home therapy and washed myself all at the kitchen table with the help of mom.pain today is about a 4 and its starting to settle in my mind that I won't be we to more the way I'd like for quite some time. So I'm blogging and reading a lot alone with some educational apps to keep my mind busy

Day4
Sleep was good last night even if it was only 6 or so hours. I'm feeling a little better each day and walking a little faster. I've also cut out a medication that is making me dizzy and halved my pain pills so I'm not going through with draw later.Reading seems to be my best friend as of now.

Day 5
Last night was scary my legs started to swell more then they have been and sleep was on and off so I called the hospital and they told me its normal for your legs to look like you can squat 600 pounds when I only weight 195.They reassured me everythng was ok .Today my Jiujitsu coach is coming over for dinner with is girl friend is is a treat considering I haven't seen anyone outside immediate family for a week or so now.I walked down the stairs faster then ever today so im getting stronger I'd like to make it outside for a walk

Day 6 I slept More last night then I have in a week my toes and legs are still a little numb. Apon waking up at 830 am I had the worst head ache I've ever had. I'm not sure what the cause was but I took all my meds drank some coffee and took an Alegra pill it slowly went away. Hopefully today ends better then it started. My goal today is to get some video gaming in and go to the grocery store just to get out of the house.I can feel the anxious Bug slowing eating at me !!

Below is a picture of me and my girl friend the day of surgery

Day 6 I slept a whole lot this morning close to 9 plus hours. But yesterday was filled with me going to the grocery store, friend house for game of thorns, and frozen yogurt with my sister and girlfrien. It doesn't sound like much but it is! I also woke up with a splitting headache again and after I took my meds and drank some coffe I was good to go! I can almost Walk today with out the assistants of a walker. Tomorrow ill be hitting the gym to get on te exercise bike and maybe some upper body stuff!

Day 7 I woke up with no headache! Had a good breakfast and got ready to hit the exercise bike for the first time for 5 mins or so.
Week1 day1
Day 8 slept good over 8 hours. Brewed some coffee and got reading on my new book " The fighters mind" it's a good read and helps me keep sane while thinking about training all the time. I rode the bike today for 10 plus minutes and I can feel myself getting stronger I barely need the walker anymore. My right legs still a little numb and feels weird but the nurse told me It should go away. I look forward to just getting out of my house

Day 9 week 1 day 2
Sleep is getting better every night I can now lay on my side with out pain. Dry mouth Apon waking has been clock work along with headaches. It must be the medicine. I feel like I'm holding an ungodly amount of water in my body and sitting around resting isn't helping but I know it's part of the process.Today ill ride the exercise bike again for longer then 11 minutes I feel like I can go longer but I need to pace myself.Ill start working my upper body tomorrow along with the bike hopefully.pAin right now is close to nill. I only take one pain med at night for sleep and Tylenol during the day.I find myself doing mindless things just to pass time

Day 10 week 2
I woke up with no headache ! Yah! Lol so I was egar to go out and get my haircut and be in public waking around with no crutch - walker. Day went smooth but slow. I completed more then 25 mins today on the exercise bike! That's me below gettin after it! After words me and my girl friend went to uno for dinner an then watched iron man 3 3d! The chair wasn't the most comfy but I've noticed on chairs that my legs aren't 90 degrees while seated ill slouch a little and it seems to take pressure off!
Day 11 week 2
Oddly enough I've been doing to at home therapy and my legs feel stronger! While in the grocery store today my girl friend said my butt looked bigger! They must be working I thought lol

Day12 week 2
when i woke today with no headache minimal leg pain.I rocked out all my therapy in the morning. Me and my girls friend decided to go in NewHope for people watching and fake house hunting. I drove for the first time since surgery and enjoyed lunch in the sun at bitter bobs BBQ. We walked Atleast 2 miles around town just enjoying the weather. My timing was still there with my foot during  drivin but the recovery was def needed.I couldn't imagin driving a week earlier.

Day13 week2
Im feeling really good today no pain medication but Tylenol when needed.Ill be starting a new book today which I hopefully follow through with reading in under 7 months.I went to the gym last night and did 30 mins on the bike with no resistance and upper body a bit.

Day14 week 2
Getting out of bed is easier each day and going down stairs also.but after 30 mins o. The bike I may of pushed it to much yesterday I'm a little sore but maybe that's a good thing ? I'm not going to bike a lot today at all if any just chill. Ill see how my body reacts.

Week 3
Sleep is good! But I still can't lay on my right side with out pain

My right side hurts still and leg feels stiff

Walking is regular

My motivation too walk faster on my mind constantly

Biking at least 5 times a week

Weight training upper body is 3 plus times a week! I need to stay fit
Week 4
Swimming helps with flexibility and is one o the most challenging work outs I've had in months.ill be working on this at least 3 times a week!

My right side is still numb and sore and is hard to sleep on right side

I can walk almost Alday with out breaks

M upper body has been getting stronger due too three times a week working out.

Goals: swimming laps with out putting feet on ground in between.

To do 20 pull ups no break each one from a dead hang.

Notes
Every time I exercise ( my lower body has a way of telling me I worked out )

Start that book I was suppose to last week :-/

VitaminD and good food seems to be helping my recovery very much!

Week 5 in the books
Notes
I've worked my upper body out 3 times this week along with 3 days plus of swimming. Swimming is helping with recovery and flexibility.
I've started a new book " the war of art" by Steve press field I must say its helping me MUCHO
I haven't done 20 dead hang pull ups yet!!!!!
Looking forward to increasing strength in upper body . My first visit to my surgeon is tomorrow since surgery wish me luck!

Weeks 5 and 6
My post surgery appointment went great ! I can return to normal bjj and Muay Thai mid August
Rehab has been a big part lately twice a week with my PT and 3 times a week on my own.
I've still yet to get 20 dead hang pull ups but I think today's a good day to do it.
A strength and coditioning coach ( friend of mine) has written a program for me to get more explosive with still heading my lower half.
Pain increases with pt but leaves 24hours later and has me feeling stronger recovery seems to be on par.

Weeks 7 and 8
I'd like to say pain has gone down but with physical therapy and stretching I get Residual pain as expecte. It's all part of the healing process.

More stretching helps my recovery and keeps me limber for activity

Walking , exercise biking and elliptical aren't a problem anymore.

I've reached my goal of 20 dead hang pull ups. But the guy at the gym who video taped it didn't know how to work my iPhone :-/ lol

With the help of coaches of mine I've increased my upper body strength  a lot with weight and body weight exercises.
There are also a bunch of at home exercises I'm doing to keep up with recovery that ill post next time.

Weeks 9 and 10
Oi! from BRASIL ! Im doing some recover work and upper body stuff as much as my schedule allows me too. ( with all of my traveling around BRASIL with my gf and her family visiting.) I say I'm 85 percent recovered and the true test will now be to test it out if Muay Thai and Bjj in August.  Hips are still slightly stiff and sore when used excessive. The funny things is my inner left knee pops now with little pain. And old injury that seems to be coming back. Maybe an acl, pcl, or medial meniscus issues it feels tight. Maybe it's just stiff for not using it all to much. Time will tell and I'm considering see a knee doc when I return to America just to be 100 percent. I'd like to reform from surgeries as much at possible. Here's a pic of me at a local park doing some pulls up to work off all the food I'm been eating ;-)

Week 14 went back to Muay Thai and Bjj nothing too crazy! Some jogging and technical stuff and my lower back and hips are hurting all over again pretty bad. Going to the doctor today to make sure all is well hopefully It's all apart of the process. I can't wait to get back to hard training and some MUAY THAI competition! And building my Muay this program at MPR endurance. Update will be  again next week

Hello all! It's been quite awhile a month or so and lower back problems haven't subsisted all that much. So I'll be seeing a spine specialist hopefully in the next couple weeks. Other then that I got my 20 pull ups down and have increased my upper body strength atom since surgery.oh also been doing a lot of yoga which I will continue to incorporate regularly. Until next time
Ossssss

update NOV 27
Since my last blog Ive had knee surgery and am with a new Physical therapy Place which caters to athletes. So my left hip and lower back pain still hasn't left and I've meet with a Non surgical spine Doctor that believes my pain is still there becsuse of not proper treatment after surgery. I will continue therapy and seeing the spine Doc and will also be going back to Dr. Parvizzi to explain the situation. On the upside I've  been training up an coming amateur fighters for MMA which is a huge passion of mine so not all is lost!

Jan 17 2014
So here's what's been happing I haven't been able to return to martial arts yet because of pain in hip- back region in the last couple months I've had knee surgery ( check blog :)) and have seen a spine specialist and had physical therapy since August of 2013! Needless to say not much has changed activity wise or progression on hips. I meet with my surgeon 2 weeks ago to explain the pain and limited  range of motion. His answer " he's not sure why I still have pain and limited range of motion !!!!) I'm 8 months post op I should be doing limbo and Muay Thai by now. So I wrote to the practice and they set up another appointment with Another surgery. Dr salvo also at Rothman who deals with hips ECT. His answer ( was maybe the last surgery didn't get all of the femeral head that needed shaving ... Little late for that. Now getting more .. MRIs and possible getting another surgery :-( not what I wanted to hear but now I've come to far to stop I need to figure what what's going on even if that involes another surgery or surgeon at another place.

February 19 2014
I saw Dr. Salvo at the Rothman Institute and had my current MRI read back to me, he said that my right hip had a lot of buildup and my left hand was torn again and I also have a sports hernia . and that there isn't too much I can do as far as clearing up the pain only a possible surgery .after seeing two hip specialist at the Rothman Institute theyere not sure why my hip pain is still there and as to how they can't  help it or if it will ever be better. Next step Cortizone shots to see if it helps and if that doesn't help if possible second surgery. At this point if I need a second surgery and it's not definite that my pain will  get better I will have to stop doing physical activity that hurts my hips. which unfortunately will be JiuJitsu and Muaythai and other martial art I never thought I would say that this is kind of all a shock to me. I've Almost exhausted every option I have. I don't believe in fate but I do believe things happen for reason I'm not sure why this is  happening but it really sucks right now!

MAy 19 , 2014

Its been over a year since my surgery and not to much has changed as far as my left hip goes. Staying positive is the only hope I have! Since seeing doctor salvo from my pervious post I saw a non surgical spine specialisyt that did and MRI of my back and discovered a torn disc in my lower back but wasn't a contributing factor to my Hip pain. I had cortisone in both hips to see if we would make a difference which it has for 6 weeks in range of motion and pain but hasn't been enough for me to continually train martial arts. SO the next step is what!? another surgery ,Regenokine,or PRP ill explore both and see which makes most sense. regardless getting a black belt in Jiujitsu is a Life Goal of mine that Im willing to take any steps to reach even if i need a replacement 10 years done the road. Ill be meeting with a doctor who deals with PRP in a couple of weeks to see if its an option. As for now its back to the drawing Board and staying Strong mentally and physically.

    2. Hey Charlie how you doing? No problem, its cool to have someone to talk to I'm doing alright just got my blood work and pre op done. I actually had my second surgery delayed till next Wednesday April 2 2014. I had my 1st surgery done by Dr. Chad Hanson In Henderson Nevada 5 mins out of Las Vegas on August 9th 2013, he is also doing my 2 surgery the right hip on weds April 2nd. I have Hip impingement in both so he did the arthroscopic, cut out all the torn cartilage and shaved my bone down. He said my left is pretty much blown out. Hes a very good doctor, he works with the minor league hocky team, usa ski team and all the local sports out here. I waited to long to get surgery that's why i wanted to communicate to others don't wait! Now our goal is to make both my hips last till im 50 he said they will both need to be replaced for sure by then. I tried cortisone shots for the diagnosis period and i felt great for a week, then it would wear off. Just got to build strength now and have a good diet. As you know it is very painful and i find coping with pain better then the mental aspect of it. Its hard to do any of my hobbies, cant even give my son a piggy back ride. I'm going to rehab very hard though with my strength and diet, make a come back like bo jackson lol. Well have a good one brother and I hope it all works out hit me up any time! stay in touch ttyl.

Im sorry to hear you can't play with your children its sad to hear these stories it really is. can you swim or ride a bike? Im looking into PRP and regenokine that can heal cartilage. Ill keep you posted on what happens! I wish you the best man!

  5. Hi Charlie Sorry to hear about your struggle with the hips. It sucks, I know because I myself have been diagnosed with a labral tear. I have stopped doing muay thai,And I am only doing boxing right now. But the pain Comes even if I don't throw any kicks. Based on your experience would you recommend having surgery? It doesn't seem like it went too well for you, And a Lot of people told me that if I get surgery I am done with martial Arts. On the flipside I don't want To aggravate things to The Point of no return. I am only 24 so It's a tough decision. What would you suggest?
Thanks for your time and I wish you a full recovery.

  6. Juls I want to thank you for taking you time to read my blog. The surgey works if you catch your tears early enough and there is significant cartilage left.Where do you live ? I'd suggest going to the ABSOLUTE best surgeon there is and getting great physical therapy after. I recently have both hips resurfaced 10 months ago and I'm back traing. It's a matter of what qualities you want out of life and if the surgery risks are worth it. Every surgery has risks and a lot of great outcome . Keep us in the loop to let us know what's happens
